Saat anda memodifikasi roda atau mengganti dengan yang lebih besar, sebenarnya pada prinsipnya spesifikasi rantai yang digunakan berkaitan langsung terhadap spek mesin (power dan torsi). Penggantian ban besar lebih besar, beban atau daya yang diteruskan rantai memang bertambah. Tetapi besarnya sangat kecil daripada kekuatan minimal rantai. Jadi dapat dikatakan, selama mesinnya tidak dimodif maka rantai tidak perlu ganti.

Karena jika anda anda ganti maka dapur pacu dikorek tenaga mesin meningkat. Jika anda mengganti bodi maka anda pasti akan mengganti rangka dan kaki-kaki secara xtreme serta kekuatan rantai harus ekstra. Sebaiknya anda pilih yang lebih besar satu tingkat.

Secara umum dikenal rantai tipe 415, 420, 428, 428H dan 520. Seperti Honda Supra yang menggunakan rantai 428 maka kalau dimodif harus mengganti yang 428H agar lebih kuat. Secara spek, rantai 428 kekuatannya hanya 1,8 ton. Sedangkan 428H kuat sampai 2,1 ton.

Untuk di motor balap akan lebih berbeda. Seperti Yamaha F1Z-R asalnya 428, setelah jadi underbone hanya pakai 415. Hal ini berlaku sebaliknya karena meski lebih kecil namun materialnya lebih kuat karena untuk racing.

Ada baiknya anda perhatikan tabel kekuatan rantai di motor anda, berikut ini.

Para bikers juga harus memahami arti kode rantai karena seringnya menyebutkan rantai ukuran 415, 420, 428, 520 dan sebagainya. Kode itu menyatakan ukuran dari rantai tersebut. Sebagai contoh, 420 maka angka 4 menyatakan jarak antar pin rantai dan untuk memudahkannya maka dilambangkan dengan huruf A.

Besarnya A adalah 1/8 inci. Mencarinya sebagai berikut; A/8 atau 4/8 inci. Kalau mau dalam satuan mm tinggal dikalikan 25,4 mm. Jadi 4/8 x 25,4 mm = 12,7 mm. Jadi jarak antar pin rantai 12,7 mm itu.

Terus dua angka di belakang yaitu 20 maka menyatakan lebar antara pelat dalam kiri-kanan rantai. Konversinya harus lihat tabel, seperti kode 20 sama dengan 6,25.

Seperti rantai 520, maka jarak antara pin dari kode 5 yaitu 15,875 mm dan lebar antar pelat dari kode 20 yaitu 6,25. Ada istilah lagi seperti 428H. Arti kode H adalah hard atau keras dan biasanya terdapat pada rantai Honda GL-Pro atau GL-Max. Ukurannya sih sama dengan rantai 428 biasa, bedanya pelat rantai lebih tebal.

Tapi kadang2 kita jg harus ngirit mas... situasi cuman jalan dalem kota motor Tigi g perlu pake set rantainya...klo tiap 2tahun aja ganti set rantai tigi bisa2 mati kere mendadak...^^, se-set ampir 1jt...

harus selalu disesuaikan dengan keadaan, terkadang apa yang secara teori ideal, itu bisa jadi tidak ideal saat dijadikan kenyataan  :angel:
