Antilock-Braking System (ABS)

Antilock-Braking System (ABS) berfungsi untuk mencegah rem mengunci (locking) pada saat pengereman mendadak yang dapat mengakibatkan roda tergelincir (slip). Pada saat pengereman, roda akan slip apabila berdeselerasi/berhenti lebih cepat dari kendaraan.


ABS merupakan closed-loop control system yang bekerja dengan cara mengatur tekanan hidrolik rem pada roda. Pada roda dipasang wheel-speed sensor untuk memonitor putaran roda. Sensor ini secara terus-menerus mengirimkan informasi putaran roda ke ABS control module (controller) yang berfungsi mengontrol mekanisme hidrolik unit (actuator). Hidrolik unit merupakan suatu mekanisme hidrolik yang di dalamnya terdapat flow-control valve/solenoid valve, pompa, reservoir, yang berfungsi mengatur tekanan hidrolik rem pada setiap roda.

ABS belum bekerja pada kondisi pengereman normal. Pada pengereman mendadak dimana roda akan berdeselerasi dengan cepat, sesaat sebelum locking ABS control module akan mengirimkan sinyal ke solenoid valve untuk menutup aliran oli dari master cylinder. Dalam kondisi ini tekanan hidrolik di rem menjadi konstan. Apabila roda masih cenderung untuk locking, control module segera memerintahkan solenoid valve untuk mengurangi tekanan hidrolik rem dengan membuka aliran oli ke arah reservoir. Selanjutnya oli akan dipompa kembali menuju master cylinder. Selama pompa ini bekerja, pedal rem akan sedikit bergerak naik turun. Beberapa kendaraan juga dilengkapi dengan ABS yang dapat menaikkan tekanan hidrolik rem.
